When it comes to dressing our kids, we like to keep it simple—and intentional.
For us, that means reaching for clothes made from 100% cotton (organic whenever possible), especially when it comes to pajamas and anything they'll spend hours in.
Cotton is soft, breathable, and gentle on sensitive skin. Most importantly, it lets our little ones move, rest, and play without being wrapped in synthetic fabrics filled with hidden chemicals.
In this article, we’re sharing why fabric choice matters, which materials we avoid (and why), and our favorite go-to brands that make shopping for your baby or toddler easier and safer.
Why We Avoid Polyester
Polyester traps heat and moisture, unlike natural fibers and is not ideal for children’s sensitive skin, as it can lead to irritation, rashes and discomfort. Polyester is made from petroleum-based chemicals that contain known irritants, including flame retardants that can off-gas or absorb into the skins. Also, polyester sheds microplastics into our skin and laundry, which is harmful to our health and the overall environment.
Why We Avoid Bamboo and/or Viscose and Rayon
Bamboo clothing is made by chemically processing bamboo pulp, often using toxic solvents like carbon disulfide. This process is not eco-friendly and the final fabric is no longer truly bamboo. These harsh solvents, along with dyes and finishes, can actually cause eczema breakouts on our children’s skin.
Viscose and rayon (regardless of their source) are produced using similar methods that can leave behind harsh chemical residues. These residues, along with synthetic dyes and finishes, can trigger eczema and other skin sensitivities in children.
