All-Purpose FAQs
Switching to new and/or non-toxic cleaners can bring up a lot of questions—especially with a cleaner as multifunctional as All-Purpose.
Here we answer some All-Purpose FAQs.
Q: What is Branch Basics Concentrate used in All-Purpose made from?
A: Branch Basics Concentrate is an EWG-verified, Made Safe certified, biodegradable product made from a combination of natural ingredients and naturally derived surfactants, including:
- Purified Water: Reverse Osmosis
- Decyl Glucoside: An ultra-gentle naturally-derived surfactant cleanser from coconut and/or Non-GMO corn.
- Chamomile Flower Extract: An organic flower extract with Allergen (IFRA) Certifications, which certifies it is nonallergenic and is not a fragrance.
- Coco Glucoside: An ultra-gentle naturally-derived surfactant derived from coconut. We use this with Decyl Glucoside to enhance cleaning and foaming power and stability.
- Sodium Citrate: A plant-derived, biodegradable sodium salt that acts as a water softener.
- Sodium Bicarbonate: A mineral-based water softener, also known as baking soda.
- Sodium Phytate: A natural chelator used as an antioxidant preservative.
Learn more in: How Branch Basics Is A Healthy And Sustainable Cleaning Line.
Q: How will I know if All-Purpose is strong enough for the job?
A: Our general rule of thumb is that All-Purpose is the first line of defense for everyday cleaning of surfaces, stains, and the other purposes listed in this article.
However, if it’s not cutting it, you can always switch to using the more concentrated Bathroom dilution for cleaning or stains, Laundry for stains, or add in Oxygen Boost as a natural bleach alternative.
Q: Can I add essential oils to All-Purpose?
A: We have not tested all types of essential oils in All-Purpose, so we cannot guarantee if they will affect its performance.
However, if you’d like to experiment, try using 1-2 drops of your favorite 100% pure, organic/wildcrafted essential oils and see how it goes.
If you notice changes in performance, go back to using it without essential oils.
Note: Essential oils are best used in glass bottles as they can cloud and degrade plastic over time which can result in the release of plastic chemicals when sprayed.
Therefore, if you plan on using essential oils, we recommend our refillable glass starter kits.
Q: Does All-Purpose kill germs? Is it a disinfectant or sanitizer?
A: No. All-Purpose is not a disinfectant or sanitizer, it is a natural soap designed to remove germs vs. killing them.
Studies suggest it is generally better to remove germs vs. killing them because when we kill germs we always leave a small percentage behind, which morph into stronger germs.
Plus, the overuse of disinfectants (even natural ones) has been linked to various health issues.
Related read: Why Oversanitizing Is Harmful To Our Health.
Still, sometimes disinfecting and sanitizing is absolutely appropriate.
In this case, start by using All-Purpose to remove germs, followed by a non-toxic disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide or natural steam.
Learn more in: How To Naturally Disinfect Surfaces [Complete Guide].
Q: Is All-Purpose safe to use on all types of fabrics, upholstery, and clothing?
A: All-Purpose is safe to use on most types of fabrics, including:
- Cotton
- Linen
- Silk
- Leather
- Wool
- Upholstery
That said, fabrics can be unpredictable. Therefore, we always recommend testing a small amount of All-Purpose in an inconspicuous place before spraying a larger area.
See our Stainmaster Guide for more details.
Q: Is All-Purpose safe to use around babies and children?
A: Absolutely! Branch Basics was designed as a natural, non-toxic cleaning line safe enough for even the most sensitive users.
Our naturally derived surfactants, Coco Glucoside and Decyl Glucoside, for example, were chosen for their extremely gentle nature and are thus often used in baby products.
Our children often use Branch Basics All-Purpose to help us clean around the house, clean their toys, wash dishes, make bubbles, etc. We also spray their hands with it while out and about.
One note of caution: This does not apply to All-Purpose but Oxygen Boost. Like all powders, Oxygen Boost can be an irritant if inhaled. Therefore, we do not recommend allowing children to use Oxygen Boost unsupervised.
Q: Is All-Purpose pet safe?
Yes. All Branch Basics products are free from ingredients that could harm your pets when used for their intended purpose—which includes Branch Basics Foaming Wash dilution as a pet shampoo!
Still, with all substances, pet parents must exercise common sense. For example, any animal (or human) could become ill if they drank a bottle of all-natural soap, like Branch Basics Concentrate, or played in a large amount of powder, like Oxygen Boost.
However, for everyday cleaning, this is one of the safest lines you can use if you have pets around.
See: Our Guide To Pet-Safe Cleaning for more details.
Q: Can I use All-Purpose on glass?
A: We generally recommend Streak-Free dilution for glass.
Q: Does All-Purpose work on really tough stains?
A: Yes. All-Purpose works incredibly well on tough stains including wine, chocolate, blowouts, and others.
See our Stainmaster Guide for more details.
Q: Can I use All-Purpose as a hand spray?
A: Yes! Although it is not a hand sanitizer, All-Purpose is gentle enough to be used on hands.
We like using our travel size of All-Purpose or Foaming Wash (one of two Branch Basics products designed for hand washing) when we’re out and about.
