How To Treat An Ear Infection (& Prevent One!) Naturally

Few things tug at the heartstrings quite like witnessing our kids grappling with the discomfort of an ear infection. The pain, sleepless nights, and frustration can be challenging for both parents and children.

Understanding how these infections occur is crucial for prevention. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the reasons behind ear infections and how to use natural remedies for relief. Let’s get into it!

How Ear Infections Happen

Ear infections in kids often occur when bacteria or viruses invade the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum.

These infections commonly follow a respiratory illness, like a cold, where germs travel from the nose and throat to the ear through the Eustachian tube. In children, this tube is shorter and more horizontal, making it easier for pathogens to reach and infect the middle ear.

Factors such as exposure to secondhand smoke, attendance in group childcare settings, exposures to harmful chemicals, and a family history of ear infections can also increase the likelihood of these infections.

Allergies may also contribute by causing inflammation in the Eustachian tube, disrupting its normal function and promoting bacterial growth.

Additionally, an earache is an indication that the kidneys are under duress. Immediate dietary adjustments and reduction of the overall toxic load can help to rapidly resolve ear infections.

The anatomy of a child's ear, particularly during early development, makes them more susceptible to infections. The Eustachian tube's size and angle often impede proper drainage, creating an environment conducive to bacterial growth.

Natural Treatments for Ear Infections

Garlic

We took this fantastic garlic olive oil drops in ears trick from Wellness Mama, and it has worked wonders. Garlic and olive are both natural remedies rooted in centuries of use.

Contrary to antibiotics, often overprescribed for ear infections, garlic works with the body, providing quick and lasting relief. Many infections are viral, rendering antibiotics ineffective, with potential long-term consequences.

This traditional remedy can ease pain and accelerate healing, offering a comforting alternative for distressed parents and their ailing children.

Below are ingredients and steps for how to treat ear infections with this method. Read here for a longer explanation!

Ingredients needed:

  • 1 clove fresh garlic (organic if possible), minced
  • 2 tbsp high-quality olive oil or sesame oil

Instructions:

  • Quick method:
    • Heat the oil in a small pan or double boiler.
    • Add minced garlic and keep on very low heat for 20 minutes.
    • Strain the garlic, let it cool, and place about two drops in the ear.
    • Make a fresh batch every 24 hours.
  • No-heat method:
    • Mince garlic and mix with olive oil.
    • Let it sit for 2-3 hours.
    • Strain and use, but it may not provide immediate relief.

Isotonic Quinton

We recommended using 1 Isotonic Quinton ampule, followed by drinking filtered water, with another ampule to follow.

Isotonic Quinton, a natural seawater solution, is beneficial for children with ear infections due to its balanced mineral content, anti-inflammatory properties, and immune system support. Its gentle nature makes it a holistic option for alleviating discomfort and aiding recovery in a child-friendly manner.

Resting

Resting is crucial for children to recover from ear infections. It allows the body to redirect energy toward healing. During rest, the immune system functions more efficiently, focusing on fighting  infections and repairing tissues.

Make sure to elevate your child’s crib or bed on the side where the child's head is to allow for better drainage of the ears.

Also, try to have your child lay their head down on the infected ear (for example, right side down if the right ear is infected).

Foods To Eat (& Not Eat)

Food is medicine. It provides essential nutrients, supports the immune system, and alleviates symptoms. Specific foods contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and vitamins that aid the body in healing and maintaining overall health.

Here’s what works best for ear infections:

  • Avoid all dairy and animal products, sugar, and processed foods during this time (especially if the right ear is infected)
  • Avoid red meat, dairy, fruit, sugar, and processed foods if the left ear is involved.
  • Vegetable soups, colorful vegetables, greens (cooked kale, mustard greens, collard greens, turnip greens, and dandelion greens), and beans (especially aduki beans) are medicinal for ear infections.

OTC Painkillers

We advocate caution in resorting to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for ear infections in children unless pain becomes severe.

While OTC painkillers may provide temporary relief, their frequent use can have side effects and may not address the root cause. We prioritize natural remedies to manage discomfort, ensuring a holistic approach to our children’s health.

In cases where the pain is intense and necessitates immediate relief, we get it! Cautiously administer OTC painkillers under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Conclusion

Our approach to treating ear infections  prioritizes natural remedies and mindful interventions, embracing whole-body health. We hope this helps bring your little ones comfort so they can be happy and healthy in no time!
