How to Clean Glass Shower Doors: 3 Methods

Are you struggling with stubborn water spots, soap scum, or streaky glass?

If you’ve been seeking solutions for how to clean glass shower doors without harsh  chemicals, then you’ve come to the right place.

In this article, we show you three simple and effective methods to get your glass sparkling, all with natural cleaning products and ingredients.

How Often Should You Clean Your Shower Doors?

Keeping your glass shower doors free from watermarks, soap scum, mold, and mildew comes down to two things: controlling moisture and regular cleanings.

To make this easy, we recommend setting a cleaning schedule:

  • After every shower: Squeegee the glass and do a quick wipe of sealed areas with a dry cloth. Leave the shower door open to air out.
  • Weekly: Give the glass a thorough wipe-down using one of the methods mentioned below.
  • Monthly: Perform a deep clean. Thoroughly clean the glass shower doors and tracks (more on that below).

Following the schedule above with one of the methods below is a great way to control soap scum, mold, and mildew while keeping your shower doors shiny.

3 Methods for Cleaning Glass Shower Doors

Cleaning glass shower doors can be simple, even when you use natural cleaning products made from gentle, human-safe ingredients.

Plus, did you know that ammonia (found in the “blue stuff”) is one of the most toxic cleaning product ingredients and isn’t necessary for achieving streak-free, spotless and shiny glass shower doors?

We talk about that and more in The 6 Best Glass Cleaners Without Ammonia.

Now let’s take a look at how to clean glass shower doors with our top three all-natural, safe, and effective methods.

Branch Basics

Branch Basics was created to replace every single cleaning and laundry product in the home with just one natural, human-safe Concentrate.

To clean glass shower doors, we recommend using our Streak-Free dilution, a foundational product for cleaning glass, windows, electronics/screens, and much more.

Just remember, a little goes a long way. One or two sprays are typically sufficient for most jobs.

Here’s how to use Branch Basics to clean glass shower doors:

  1. In the Streak-Free spray bottle, add distilled water* to the “Water” line and one drop (yes, just one!) of Branch Basics Concentrate. Shake and spray the glass shower door directly.
  2. Wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

Cleaning tip: Leave a bottle of Streak-Free and a squeegee in each bathroom for easy cleanings. Spray and wipe after each shower to keep soap scum under control and shower doors shiny.

Streak-Free can also be used on chrome or stainless steel elements, such as the shower door tracks.

*Note: We recommend using distilled water to mix our Streak-Free dilution. This is especially important for those with hard water, which tends to leave spots and streaks on glass.

Lemon and Baking Soda

Combine baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, with a fresh lemon half to tackle lighter cleaning jobs.

Lemon’s natural acidity, combined with baking soda’s mild abrasiveness, helps dissolve soap scum and hard water stains.

Here’s how to use lemon and baking soda to clean glass shower doors:

  1. Cut a lemon in half. Dip one half into a bowl of baking soda.
  2. Rub the lemon half across the glass shower door, focusing on grime and soap scum buildup. As you do this, the lemon and baking soda will react to make a sudsy cleaning foam.
  3. Let dwell for about 5-10 minutes.
  4. Rinse well and buff with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

Distilled White Vinegar

Distilled white vinegar* used alone, diluted, or mixed with natural dish soap, is an excellent all-natural, safe and effective tool for cleaning your glass shower doors.

When applied, the vinegar works to dissolve grime deposits and hard-water scale, making it easy to wipe away.

Here’s how to use distilled white vinegar to clean glass shower doors:

  1. Turn on all fans and open all windows to ventilate the bathroom.
Heat ½ to 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, and pour into a spray bottle. You may choose to dilute it with distilled water.
  2. Spray generously on the glass shower door and let dwell for at least 5-10 minutes.
  3. Wear gloves and scrub the glass with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth.
  4. Rinse and buff with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

*Note: When cleaning with vinegar, caution should be used when using a spray bottle as acetic acid is an eye and lung irritant. Make sure you avoid breathing the fumes and provide good ventilation to clear the air quickly of the acetic acid.

Additionally, avoid using vinegar to clean natural shower materials, such as stone. Prolonged contact with these types of materials can etch and damage them. Always rinse thoroughly.

How to Clean Shower Door Tracks

Don’t forget to clean the shower door tracks!

Often overlooked, these metal or stainless steel components tend to trap water and soap, resulting in the growth and buildup of soap scum, mold and mildew.

Here’s how to clean shower door tracks:

  1. HEPA vacuum the tracks to remove any loose debris and dust.
  2. Plug the track’s drain hole with a paper towel.
  3. Choose from one of these two options:
    1. Fill the track with undiluted vineger.
    2. Or, spray liberally with Branch Basics Bathroom. Add a scoop of Oxygen Boost for tough mold, mildew, watermarks, and stains.
  4. Let sit overnight.
  5. Soak up excess liquid with a paper towel.
  6. Use an old soft-bristled toothbrush or a sponge to scrub water stains and grime, making sure to clean all nooks and crannies.
  7. Wipe clean with a dry, clean microfiber cloth.
